Abstract: The importance of using one shared language has been realised as the world becomes more globalised. Moreover, businesses, organisations and multi-companies have acknowledged the importance of using one language as an internal and external communication tool. English language is the common worldwide shared language and has been adopted as a primary communication language in some countries over the years. The key aim of this paper is to focus on the various perspectives about the English language as a practical and communication tool in the global world between the individuals who don't share a common native tongue or culture and those who use the English language as a preferred language for foreign communication. In addition, this article will present the consequences for teaching business English.

Teachers’ Morale and Academic Performance of Secondary School Students in South West, Nigeria

Abstract: The poor performance of students in Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination in recent time, particularly in Southwest Nigeria, appears to be discouraging. This study sought to investigate the effectiveness of teachers’ morale on secondary school students’ academic performance in South West, Nigeria. A questionnaire and a proforma were used for data collection. Public Secondary School teachers and students in South-West Nigeria formed the population for the study. The sample for the study comprised 375 teachers and 9375 students. Multistage stratified random sampling technique was used to choose the sample. Findings showed that teachers’ morale made significant contribution to the prediction of students’ academic performance. It accounted for 58.9% of the total variance in students’ academic performance. In the same vein, all the indices of teachers’ morale individually made significant contribution to the prediction of students’ academic performance, with teachers’ salary as the best predictor. Teachers’ salary alone accounted for 47.4% of the total variance in students’ academic performance, while teachers’ workload was the least predictor with 3.8% contribution of the variance. There is a significant relationship between teachers’ morale and students’ academic performance (r=0.49, p<0.05). While the paper concluded that students’ performance is influenced by teachers’ morale, it therefore recommended that policies that will enhance teachers’ morale such as improved teachers’ allowance should be put in place.

Abstract: Reading is vital in the life of every student. It is germane to academic performance of students. Imbibing reading habits will help them become lifelong learners. The study investigated the effect of reading habit on the academic performance of students of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria. Five research questions guided the study. The study adopted survey research method. The research instrument used was structured questionnaire. The findings show that majority of the respondents who took part in the study are not used to their time for reading and they purposely read for examination, self development and for developments of spoken and written English. The respondents mostly read notebooks, textbooks and electronic resources. The study also revealed that reading habits has significance effect on academic performance of students. The major factor militating against students reading habit is the Social media e.g. Facebook, Whatsapp, Twitter, 2go etc. Therefore, the study recommends that students should be encouraged by their lectures to read different information resources other than their notebooks and handouts, they should have a blueprint of their time schedule for reading and also academic institutions should monitor use of social media, so that students will meticulously use it for educational purposes.
